Scarlet Letter And Evil Problem The virtue of truth and the evil of secret sin are clearly illustrated in the novel, The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The three main characters in this novel display their own honesty and sins. Hester Prynne exhibits the essence of truth and pride when she bravely faces the humiliation of the scaffold. In chapter 17, when Hester apologizes to Dimmesdale about concealing Chillingworth's identity, she says, "In all things else, I have striven to be true! Truth was the one virtue which I might have held, and did hold fast, through all extremity...A lie is never good, even though death threaten on the other side (pg. 202)!" It is Hester's pride, which sustains her from the beginning of the novel to the end, when she dies, still sporting the scarlet A on her bosom. Hester's sin is the sin which gives the book its title and around which the action of the book resolves. Adultery, which was prohibited by the Seventh Amendment, was usually punished by death. A woman in the crowd stated, "At the very least, they should have put the brand of a hot iron on Hester Prynne's forhead...She may cover it (the scarlet letter) with a brooch, or such like heathenish adornment, and so walk the streets as brave as ever (pg. 53)!" Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale shows truth by his occupation. People living in Boston, Massachusetts looked up to and respected Dimmesdale because he was a minister. One of his sins was his inability to publicly acknowledge that he committed adultery with Hester and that he is the father of Pearl, Hester's daughter. However, adultery was not his biggest sin. His biggest sin is hypocrisy. In chapter ten, he speaks of the concealment of his sins, he says, "It may be that they are kept silent by the very constistution of their nature. Or-can we not suppose it-guilty as they may be, retaining, nevertheless, a zeal for God's glory and man's welfare...no evil of the past be redeemed by better service (pg. 137)." While trying to conceal his sins, they take over his conscience and literally confess themselves during his acts of madness. The third main character, Roger Chillingworth, is a pretty innocent man in the beginning of this book. He comes to America to be reunited with his wife, Hester, but soon comes to find out that she has committed adultery. Chillingworth has however committed two sins also. One of them being against nature. He says, "A man already in decay, having given my best years to feed the hungry dream of knowledge, -what had I to do with youth and beauty like thine own (pg. 77)!" Sin, in actuality, begins to take possession of Chillingworth when he noticed Hester on the scaffold. Chillingworth eventually destroys himself. As he is talking to Hester in chapter fourteen when he has realized what has happened between Hester and Dimmesdale, he says, "Dost thou remember me? Was I not, though you might deem me cold, nevertheless a man thoughtful for others, craving little for himself, -kind, true, just, and of constant, if not warm affections? Was I not all this (pg. 180)?" As shown in the novel, each individual character displayed both senses of truth and evil. Some were less severe than others, but still sins. English Paper One: The Extended Response When you ask people what they hate the most about English the majority will say writing extended responses. Essays, lectures, feature articles they all cause great grief to the poor HSC students who have to write them. I believe this attitude is mostly due to the fact that a great deal of students simply don’t know how to construct a response. They don’t know how to construct a thesis statement, or write arguments that can be backed up by textual support. All these students need is a little assistance, information on how to write something that serves it purpose.So here is that help, that little bit of assistance that will help you to get the highest marks possible in your extended response for Belonging. Breaking the response up into its primary elements makes the whole process a lot easier and allows you to focus on what is really important. To illustrate this let’s take a look at Arthur Miller’s 1953 play The Cru cible, and Jean Rhys’1966 novel Wide Sargasso Sea. First up, the thesis statement: The most important part of any essay is establishing a solid thesis statement that sets up the tone and structure for your essay.It is an argument about a specific aspect of belonging / not belonging which you can apply to multiple texts. In this scene, it would probably be wise to also comment on the setting of Millers play, the courtroom and how powerless individuals can improve their position in society and forge a sense of belonging by joining the majority. For this you could use the example of Cheever, a man who has gained much power through the court, â€Å"I am an official of the court, I cannot keep it†. Constructing supporting arguments: As the thesis is the point you are arguing it is wise to back it up similarly to what has been done above.You need to support you ar gument no matter what, it is essential, otherwise there is no point to the response. This starts with a topic sentence, switching over to our related text (Jean Rhys’ novel, Wide Sargasso Sea) for some variety. For example: Antoinette has forged a positive connection to her home at Granbois because she knows through experience that only there is she free from the derision of society. This topic sentence is straight from the first part of the thesis statement.The key terms are taken out and moulded to fit into an idea that can back up what your thesis statement is saying. Many of the play’s key ideas are introduced here, including Proctor and Abigail’s affair, â€Å"John I am waitin’ for you every night. Her motivation for her future behaviour is foreshadowed when she retorts: â€Å"A wild thing may say wild things. † This highlights her reluctance to conform to the social and cultural values of Salem. This includes contextualisation of the scene, for the marker, as well as a technique, and example and the effect of it all. In your analysis you are not restricted to using direct quotes as evidence for your argument. Consider Miller’s effective use of place. His chosen domestic setting of the bedroom emphasises the inappropriate nature of their relationship.Furthermore, you could combine this with discussing Miller’s use of stage direction to heighten the dramatic tension, for example Abigail behaves â€Å"Tauntingly† towards Proctor, â€Å"grasping his and before he can release her†. Both sublime and mundane activities are being enlarged and the number of jobs has grown as a consequence, not declined. † (Brozen) The second source of fear that the latest idea of automation or technology will become something more then what it was intended to be. People were so obsessed with what the future would hold books and movies were made to cast this fear. Science fiction was used to depict future events that could occur. Films such as one that was released in 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey where an artificially intelligent supercomputer, HAL takes over a space mission. Today some super computers are in use, are they anyway near being HAL? Some say we are getting close to true artificial intelligence, but we are far from HAL. The forth source of fear of automation is that it reduces the demand for unskilled workers. This may be true in some instances but at the same time the demand for skilled workers will increase. As stated previously companies do their best to keep their employees. When possible they are retraining these employees to fill new jobs that become available because of the new technology. If this were true then the unemployment rate would raise proportionately. If automation is added to a process and did the work of five people then five people would be unemployed. We know that this does not make sense. It has increased productivity to the process not that it reduced people from the process. Every dayI see improvements to the work floor. There are many facets of the business that help with these improvements. Some of which are our Product Development Teams (PDT) that will follow the work to see if anything can be changed. They work closely with our Research and Development (RD) operations. These two areas have grown by 1000% in the last twenty years. Another area that has greatly grown is our engineering staff and related personal. In 1996 the skilled trades had two engineers to take all our requests to. We now have engineers for facilities, electricians, repairmen, mobile equipment, power house, and toolmakers. They permit whites to form a mutual moral community with them. Together they would suffer and sacrifice for the good. Yet, in the course of the 1960s, especially after the death of Martin Luther King in the spring of 1968, much black rhetoric became exclusionary. Advocates of black power, the Black Muslims, and others argued that blacks were a unique and separate people unto themselves. In the name of their past suffering under slavery and its consequences, they indicted white society universally. The most extreme interpretations against white society were global and violent, and all discussion of black violence and black racism of black against black were sharply suppressed. In conclusion, it may be noted that Jay and Wrights works are very similar in nature, yet differ in rhetoric and narration style. Furthermore, the authors lived during different times, which influenced their realization of the processes depicted in these works. The era of 1960s and 1970s was a time when young people from ethnic and mainstream groups in various parts of the country sought to express their hopes for the liberty. In the history of the U.S., no other era embodies the rise of youthful self-conscious idealism. Young white Americans participated in a process, which they expressed in art and in politics. Even though, Jay rightfully claims that blacks are far from celebrating their victory in the war against injustice and discrimination, it is clear that those times depicted by Writing are long gone and are unlikely to ever return. Diagnosis of the problem The problem is that the companies compete with each other through advertising and in the advertising they tend to criticize their competitors. Comparative advertising. When they start advertising in this way the start a chain reaction. The first company makes the first advertisement which criticizes the second company and they will react on this with a lawsuit. The third company will profit from this with their own advertising and lawsuits. And this results in bad advertising and a lot of lawsuits. If you look at this case you see that Burger king started with a comparative advertising. Burger King compared their hamburger with the hamburger from Mc Donalds. Mc Donalds reacted with a lawsuit. This gives Mc Donalds and Burger King free publicity witch resulted in Wendys reacting with their own lawsuit. Although this war of words give the companies free publicity it also creates negative publicity. The lawsuits also generates bad publicity and will reverse the effect the advertising had in the first place. The lawsuits creates costs which results in a higher selling price for the costumer. The costumer will not appreciate this and will buy less hamburgers (in this case). Which result in less profit for the company. In this case the companies in the end profited from the advertising war. But as I said in the last paragraph this is not always the case. The three companies showed an increase in sales after everything was over. People say that bad press is better than no press at all. After this case you can ask your self the question whether the companies had planned this war of words. I think that this is possible but highly unethical. I think that it is unethical because you mislead the customer. They get fooled by the information put forward by the fast food companies. In my opinion companies should be honest and ethical in their promotion. This is not the case here. I think it is not ethical to criticize a product from another company to promote your own product. Competitive advertising is in my opinion not the best way to advertise the product. I think that advertising should be positive. If you compare your product to that of an other company you give the advertisement a negative ring to it. You say that you are better that the competition. But you make the customer think about the competition at the same time. It is better to use only your own product and promote it through advertisements focusing on your own company and product. A positive advertising has more effect on the public than a negative one. In Belgium it is not yet allowed to use comparative advertising. This is with the intention to protect consumers but also competitive companies against unlawful advertisements. In Belgium it is seen as unethical and misleading to use comparative advertising. I could choose between internal development, M A or joint developments and strategic alliances. Mergers and acquisitions are out of the question, I assume that the key players, Quick and Mc Donalds, are not willing to give up their brand name to me a new fast-food restaurant. Joint developments and strategic alliances can be considered. My main reason for this strategy is the cost/risk spreading. The Belgian fast food market is very competitive and difficult. Therefore, I think that I should establish a joint venture, strategic alliance or partnership with other fast food chains in Belgium, e.g. with Panos or Carestel. Panos is present in the Belgian railway stations, known as Panos rail. Since there are just a few hamburger restaurants in the stations, it is an opportunity for me to be the first hamburger chain to be large-scale present there. Carestel, established on 40 different places along the high ways in Belgium and Luxemburg, offers breakfast, traditional Belgian meals, pasta, salads and sandwiches. Starting up a joint venture with Carestel would put me in a unique position to be present along the Belgian highways. The existing platform of Panos and Carestel can be used to accelerate the growth of the brand in Belgium and even across Europe. The size of Panos and Carestels operations and the availability of immediate locations will enable rapid development of a new fast-food restaurant in Belgium. The essence of a joint venture is the synergy effect of two different entities merging. Such an international business strategy will attempt to; solve many logistic problems such as access to good quality meat and other supplies, ease the access to the Belgium market, share risk with a local entity, and finally serve as a sign of commitment to the host government increasing goodwill. In addition, due to the complexity of many barriers to entry into Belgium, a potential partner with sufficient contacts/networks with government agency officials may smoothen the process of setting-up operations in the nation. The potential joint-venture partner should be large, well established, provide excellent distribution channels and have personal network access to government officials. It should also have modern equipment and a good management record. It is recommended that a partner is found by backwards integration. In other words, it is a good domestic meat supplier. In order to ensure total commitment and balance of power between the two partners, a 55/45 joint venture, with me as the dominant partner should be set-up. A joint venture will also significantly ease the entry to the Belgium market. In addition, local business customs and laws can be quicker understood and the local knowledge of culture, language and geography is beneficial for any entrant into a relatively unknown market. Concerning a joint venture with Panos rail, I see this concept more like one location where we are both present and where the consumer can choose between a sandwich or a burger. The reason for the shared site is only practical. Suppose a group of people coming for a snack but they have to be dining separately, is not nice.
